Wellness

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.

"...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." - The World Health Organization.

"a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential." - The National Wellness Institute

Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.

Emotions are linked to our body and brain.

The benefits of being in the moment...
Taking time out of your day to be still, quiet and at peace is one of the easiest gifts you can give your mind and body. Children need to learn how to do this, practice how to do this and feel like they have permission to do this. Educate, Empower, Engage!

Mindfulness in schools

Happiness, it's a pretty good emotion.
It is not healthy to force happiness but happiness does have a genuine positive affect on a person's ability to reach their full potential.
What is happiness anyway?

Why Mindfulness...

A good quote to consider... “I think this is what our school systems are missing,” Shupe says. “If we don’t slow them down, slow their brain down, and get them to think about what they’re made of and who they are, we’re going to lose them.

A Glimpse at a Mindful Classroom

How to set your child up for success at school.
Your child/ren need to eat the right type of food for their developing brain and body. The type of food you and your child/ren eat can provide the go to nutrients to encourage big thinking, patient thinking, creative thinking and more. Consider revamping your breakfast routine or do a quick assessment of your family's food intake. Small or big changes, either way it will make a difference.

Breakfast food and the brain.

Help your children make the grade with more physical fitness.

Individuals who are physically literate move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person.

Daily physical activity is vital for building healthy bodies and better brain power. But in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a new school year, how can you help ensure that physical activity remains a priority for your child? When families are active together, they naturally spend more time together and experience health benefits! Consider participating in weekend or after-school events or serving as a volunteer.

Add mindfulness to your summer menu!

Earlier this year I wrote on mindfulness and its benefits to the brain and body. The evidence also suggests that students that have mindful practices are emotionally aware, have an easier time regulating emotions, are more focused, and ultimately do better in the classroom.

Maybe you were interested in developing this with yourself or your child/ren but didn’t know where or when to start. Start this summer. With as little as 5-10 minutes of daily practice

This summer fit daily mindfulness exercise in the family schedule. The benefits are well worth the effort!

Get your Mind On!

Keeping kids fit...Moving and grooving can be easier than we think! Parents and children can work to motivate and support each other.

Keeping kids fit! A great wellness warrior!
A super site for parents and students.

Reflection is a wonderful process but not always easy. Consider the questions below from "elephant journal" to begin your thinking.

1. Where do I want to be in five years time?
2. How did I want to feel on the inside in five years time? Where would I be emotionally, physically, mentally?
3. What bad habits do I need to stop?
4. What mistakes have I made today?
5. Who do I envy or admire? What qualities do these people have? In what way can I learn from them? What is it about them that inspires me?
6. What stories have I told myself?
7. Who do I love and who loves me?
8. If no one judged me, who would I be?

Mental health is important for overall wellness. Teaching students to ignore the stigmas that are generally attached to "going to see the counselor"..seeking help when feeling depressed, navigating the benefits of crying among other mental/emotional health issues can be a tough sell to teens and parents/adults. Want to reach your full potential? Practice positive habits in all areas of health.
